Why OMR buildings take in water
Much of the land along OMR, around Perungudi, Thoraipakkam and Sholinganallur, is low-lying and sits close to the Pallikaranai marshland. Groundwater is high, and it rises further during the north-east monsoon. Buildings here often have basements, lift pits and underground sumps that sit in or near that water.
Water under pressure from outside finds the weak points: construction joints, cracks, pipe entries and the joint between the floor slab and the walls. On top of the building, large flat terraces take the full force of monsoon rain.
